The nonprescription oral pain relievers in your local drugstore aren't all the same. But they do fall into two main categories:

1) Pain relievers that reduce inflammation. Often called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), this group includes medications with aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium or ketoprofen.

2) Pain relievers that don't decrease inflammation. The active ingredient in these medications is acetaminophen.

Ecotrin
Ecotrin is always safety coated, and that's great news for people who take aspirin every day. The coating on Ecotrin aspirin prevents the aspirin from dissolving in the stomach. Instead, it dissolves and is absorbed in the small intestine, where most nutrients and drugs are absorbed anyway. Thus, the stomach lining is protected from irritation.

Advil
Ibuprofen belongs to a class of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These drugs are used for the management of mild to moderate pain, fever, and inflammation. Prostaglandins are chemicals that are made by the body and are responsible for causing pain, fever and inflammation.

Aleve
Naproxen belongs to a class of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These drugs are used for the management of mild to moderate pain, fever, and inflammation. They work by reducing the levels of prostaglandins, chemicals that are responsible for pain, fever and inflammation.

Orudis KT
Orudis is an over-the-counter version of the prescription drug ketoprofen. It provides temporary relief from headache, toothache, muscle ache, backache, arthritis, menstrual cramps, and the minor aches and pains of a cold. They also reduce fever.

Excedrin
Together, acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine are used to treat pain from conditions such as headache (including migraine), muscle aches, menstrual cramps, arthritis, backache, toothaches, colds and sinus infections.

Anacin
Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and a fever reducer. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine.
