Mönckebergstrasse  (continued)

Further on we find a new arcade in the Levantehaus. You can hardly miss it, with flames burning away in their holders high above the main entrance, a bronze centaur hanging over the heads of those entering, and stucco creatures dotted about inside. The atmosphere is enhanced by the most exquisite boutiques and shops of all types, selling everything under the sun, from cafés to fashion stores, the wonderful aroma of the bakers to gift shops. Janatra Dessous offers hand-made bodices and corsages, La Chemiserie Traditionelle is the specialist's store for tailor-made shirts and ties, and the Swatch Shop is just the place to find watches.

Above one entrance to the Levantehaus you'll find the Park Hyatt Hotel, where you can enjoy the sensational creations of Head Chef Alexander Noeth in Apples Restaurant & Bar. And if you're after something rather special, try out the Steiff-Galerie.

Still sticking to the Mönckebergstrasse, the options come thick: for example there is Görtz, Europe's largest 'house of shoes' or with men's outfitter Braun who is known for its excellent advice and supply.

You can't fail to notice the Mö's special aroma, partly because of the many perfumes sold at Parfumerie Douglas or the huge Karstadt in the centre of the Mö. Other contributing sources are the many cafés, street bakeries and food stands, all of which offer the perfect opportunity to have a little something. Once refreshed you'll be in better shape to spot the fashion gems at Zara, Galeria Kaufhof, C & A, Peek & Cloppenburg, Anson's, Marco Polo, Thomas i Punkt and Aygill's to name just a few.

Fancy something a bit sporty? You'll get plenty of exercise working through the displays at Sport Scheck and Sport Hütte. Those looking to brighten up their day will want to call in at Prediger, Hamburg's unique store dedicated to lamps.

The Passage-Kino is a movie theatre with an arcade worth looking at as much for its interior as for its programme. While we're on the subject of looking: Optik Fielmann has three floors dedicated to the art of 'looking good'. But it's not the only place to assist with looking your best - jewellery, watches and other luxuries can be found at Christ amongst others.

There are plenty of other things that catch the eye on the Mö - starting with the St. Petri Church on the corner of Bergstrasse. Built in 1195, this is the oldest parish church in the city, and you shouldn't miss the Madonna with child dating from 1470. The small streets on either side of Mö are also packed with things to see - like the glass-fronted studio of Radio Hamburg, the Versman-Haus with its sandstone facade, neo-renaissance gables and dormer windows, and much more besides.

A good tip is to go exploring off the Mö - the area around Gertrudenstrasse, Rosenstrasse and Paulstrasse is bursting with gems such as antique shops, galleries, bookshops, record shops, and an umbrella shop.
